Automating COM/DCOM vulnerability research

COM (Component Object Model) and DCOM (Distrubuted COM) have been interesting components in Windows from a security perspective for many years. In the past, COM has been a target for many purposes. Not only have many vulnerabilities been discovered in COM, but it is also used for lateral movement or bypassing techniques.

This white paper describes how COM/DCOM works and what complications it has. In the next chapters, the white paper will describe how security research can be automated using the fuzzing approach. Since this approach comes with some problems, it describes how these problems were overcome (at least partially).

Revisiting automating MS-RPC vulnerability research and making the tool open source

Microsoft Remote Procedure Call (MS-RPC) is a protocol used within Windows operating systems to enable inter-process communication, both locally and across networks.

Researching MS-RPC interfaces, however, poses several challenges. Manually analyzing RPC services can be time-consuming, especially when faced with hundreds of interfaces spread across different processes, services and accessible through various endpoints.

This post will dive into the new algorithm/method I designed and implemented for fuzzing. It will describe some results and why these results differ from the default fuzzing approach. Apart from the additional implemented features, the tool will be released with this post as well! All security researchers from over the world can now freely use this tool in their research.

Automating MS-RPC vulnerability research

Researching MS-RPC interfaces, however, poses several challenges. Manually analyzing RPC services can be time-consuming, especially when faced with hundreds of interfaces spread across different processes, services and accessible through various endpoints.

Today, I am publishing a White paper about automating MS-RPC vulnerability research. This white paper will describe how MS-RPC security research can be automated using a fuzzing methodology to identify interesting RPC interfaces and procedures.

By following this approach, a security researcher will hopefully identify interesting RPC services in such a time that would take a manual approach significantly more. And so, the tool was put to the test. Using the tool, I was able to discover 9 new vulnerabilities within the Windows operating system. One of the vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-26651), allowed crashing the Local Session Manager service remotely.
